When I was teaching witchcraft back in the mists of time, #1 question was, hands down, "Can I see your Book of Shadows?".
If you're Wiccan, you know this is how Wiccans refer to their grimoire, spell book or whatever you want to call it. I had a really shit system back in the day - literally it was a massive ring binder with print-outs from the internet, photocopies (who remembers those??) and clippings pasted onto paper. I'd show it to students and they'd all be like..
They clearly thought I had this huge, leather-bound tome of calligraphy and detailed mystical illustrations. No.
Maybe I should take it out of the loft and do a video?! Today, that binder has been replaced by Evernote. Yes, Evernote. Cuz ain't nobody got time for paper in this day and age. And also, Evernote goes wherever you go, on your laptop, tablet and phone (not sponsored, haha).
You don't need to have a physical journal, it can literally be Evernote or just a giant Word file. For me, I have a dual system. For reference materials (the actual 'grimoire) I have a digital note keeping solution, but, I do have a paper journal for magical journalling!
I don't have any reference materials in there though, that's what Evernote is for. I use it for weekly spreads with affirmations and cards of the week, moon phase data, tarot spreads I've done and specific things I'm working on, like the chakra challenge in the image at the top of this post. I also have all my other personal stuff in there like house management, budgeting etc. I keep a separate bullet journal for my professional work, as I like to keep the two separate.
Here are some reasons why I feel journalling my magical life works for me;
- Reflecting on reference materials with personalised thoughts
- Track your progress with a specific thing, like my chakra challenge
- Learn through doing and writing it down, such as crystal/tarot card meanings
- Remember things, such as that ritual/spell you performed and track outcomes
- Pass your knowledge on, because one day you might want to...
Have you tried magical journalling? Let me know if you want me to feature more posts on building a grimoire or magical journalling!
I frequently post my bullet journal/grimoire spreads on Instagram, so go follow me there @linaelvirabizz!
